Current Obsession: Ted Lasso (TV Show)
What: An internet famous American Football coach gets hired to coach a football (soccer) team in the UK. The coach, played by Jason Sudeikis, is a kind, generous, emotionally intelligent, man who brings unexpected wisdom to every interaction he has. Even his boss, a “strong female character”, who is revealed to be more complex than any other over-40-female-in-a-comedy I’ve seen. Also, it’s super-duper funny and the perfect blend of American and British comedy.
Why: Ted Lasso, a male main character models healthy communication and emotionally supportive relationships with other men and women. It passes the Bechdel-Wallace test! All of the characters grow and change and make me laugh hysterically. Anthony Head (Giles from Buffy) plays an absolutely horrid man and it’s great. This inspiring, heartfelt, comedy full of emotionally healthy relationships, is the reactionary story we need to Trump-era toxic masculinity. Oh and the music is really good too!
