What: An journalist, and Little Everywhere productions, looks into multi-level marketing companies (MLM’s) and the Wellness Industry. She covers the history, individual’s experiences and talks to a leader of an MLM, among other experts. The Wellness Industry, everything from juice cleanses and essential oils, to tarot cards and magnetic bracelets, has some roots in MLM’s so it is a natural progression for season two.
Why: MLM’s, also sometimes referred to as pyramid schemes, often offer false hope for financial success, ultimately leading to individual’s being worse off then they were before. Learning about the prevalence of MLM’s in the U.S., the communities that they target, and the close ties some have to our governmental organizations, was eye-opening and heartbreaking. The other key feature of MLM’s (and the Wellness Industry) is more often than not, emotional manipulation, not unlike cults. Preying on people who are trying to make a better life for themselves and their families is evil, and understanding more about these companies, who runs them and how they work, drew me in more than any other true crime podcast.
