The Small Things: Halloween Mugs in January

What: Put simply, it is drinking from a mug intended for Halloween, in the fall, in January.

Why: this simple act made me smile. I first bought this mug because I liked it. I knew that it would only be socially acceptable for one month out of the year, but I love. So when it was time for me to have my coffee I grabbed my skeleton mug and filled it up. as I drank from it I contemplated modern queer identity, in the general sense, and how Halloween was a good chuck of that. I love the pageantry and production behind a good Halloween costume, or party. There is just something so freeing about being able to be larger than life for a little it. While I drank my coffee I planned out my outfits for my trip to Disney. I jokingly shared some of my struggles with my work mates. For example: can you/should you wear an animal print dress to a seafood restaurant? Instead of joining in on the fun, committing to the bit, they mocked me for being too much. Well I’m writing this after my first day in Disney and I got soooo many compliments on my clothes. This mug reminds me that being “too much” or trying “too hard” are not shameful things. When you find something that you want to try hard at fallow that. There is clearly passion guiding you and it would be a shame to waste that.
